About This Lot
Albert Einstein is part of Andy Warhol's 1980 screenprint series Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century, in which the artist depicted 10 people of Jewish faith who he thought to be "geniuses" of their time. The work and cultural contributions of these 10 individuals ranged in subject matter, including literature, acting and science.
Featured in the present print is Albert Einstein, the German-born physicist famous for his theory of relativity and mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2. These portraits, created in Warhol's signature Pop Art style with color blocked backgrounds and simplified contour lines, highlight the achievements of each chosen subject. Subsequent to creating this edition of 250 prints, Warhol produced similar works on canvas, featuring the same 10 subjects, to be displayed in an exhibition in New York City's Jewish Museum in the fall of 1980. In 2008 the Jewish Museum exhibited the portfolio again, along with preparatory drawings and paintings in the exhibition "Warhol's Jews: Ten Portraits Reconsidered."
