Maud Earl

(American/British, 1864–1943)

Maud Earl was a British-born American painter best known for her accurate paintings of dog breeds. Her warm, descriptive portraits of dogs, executed in a sketchy yet realistic style, were popular among royals such as Queen Victoria of England and Queen Alexandra of Denmark. Born in 1864 in London, United Kingdom, Earl’s father George, her uncle, and her half-brother were all animal portraitists. She was taught from a young age by her father to paint and draw and went on to study at the Royal Female School of Art in London. Though it was considered unusual for a woman to make a living as a painter in Victoria era Britain, Earl was very successful. She left England for New York in 1916 feeling that the era of Britain she knew and loved had passed due to World War I. Her works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Worthing Museum and Art Gallery in the United Kingdom, and the Russel-Coates Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth, among others. Earl died in 1943 in New York, NY.
