Hans von Aachen

(German, 1552–1615)

Hans von Aachen was a German painter best known for his depictions of allegorical and mythological scenes in a Northern Mannerist style. Von Aachen’s works feature uniquely smooth paint application and focus on the integrity of forms and tonal masses, which was a hallmark of Netherlandish Renaissance painters. Born in 1552 in Cologne, Germany, von Aachen went on to study with the Flemish painter E. Jerrigh and spent 14 years in Italy, during which he toured Rome and Florence and studied with the Italian Mannerist followers of Tintoretto and Michelangelo. Upon returning to Bavaria in Germany, the artist became a portrait painter of the aristocracy, eventually securing the post of official painter to Rudolph II, the Holy Roman Emperor whose Imperial Court was in Prague. Today, Von Aachen’s works are in the collections of the National Gallery in London, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, among others. Von Aachen died on March 14, 1615 in Prague, Holy Roman Empire.
