Alvar Aalto

(Finnish, 1898–1976)

Alvar Aalto was a Finnish architect and interior designer, widely regarded as one of the forebears of Nordic Modernism. He was born on February 3, 1898 in Kuortane, Finland and studied at the Helsinki University of Technology. His first independent work was shown at the Industrial Exposition in Tampere, and one year later, he opened his architectural office. Aalto’s early work was concerned with Nordic Classicism, which is exemplified by his first public building, the Jyväskylä Workers' Club, built in 1925. Aalto’s foray into Modernism began with the auditorium he built for the Viipuri Library, which is characterized by its use of natural materials and emphasis on light. His later buildings are differed in their grand, wavy lines, such as the House of Culture in Helsinki and the Aalto Theater Opera house in Essen, Germany. Aalto also made significant contributions to furniture design, with his stools notably being used by the Apple corporations in their stores. He died on May 11, 1976 in Helsinki, Finland. One of the world’s most prestigious architecture awards, the Alvar Aalto Medal, is awarded each year by the Finnish Association of Architects in his honor.
