Alvar and Aino Aalto were a married Finnish couple who worked both together and separately to design furniture, dishes, lamps, and architecture. They considered their designs as comprehensive works of art—to that end, if they designed a building, they would also create and arrange everything that went inside it, down to furnishings and small functional objects. Alvar Aalto was born on February 3, 1898 in Kuortane, Finland and his wife Aino Aalto was born on January 24, 1894 in Helsinki, Finland. She went on to study architecture at the Institute of Technology, and eventually went to work for Alvar’s architecture firm, where they met and married six months later. The Alvar Aalto Museum in Jyväskylä, Finland was founded in 1966, and was designed and built by Alvar in 1973. The collection holds nearly 1,500 items and over 30 architectural models. As early as 1938, Aalto's work was acquired by The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Aino Aalto died on January 13, 1954 in Helsinki, Finland and Alvar Aalto died on May 11, 1976 in Helsinki, Finland.
