Biography
Ilmari Aalto was a Finnish painter known for his Cézanne-like landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. Born on August 7, 1891 in Kuopio, Finland, Aalto moved to Helsinki where he studied at the Central School of Art and Design and the Finnish Art Society. Exhibitions by Edvard Munch and trips to Paris influenced Aalto’s adoption of brighter colors and more visible brushstrokes. The artist died on September 29, 1934 in Helsinki, Finland at the age of 43. Today, Aalto’s works are held in the collections of the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki and the Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland.
