About This Lot

Frank Stella is an American artist best known for his use of geometric patterns and shapes in creating paintings, prints, and sculptures. Arguably one of the most influential living American artists, Stella’s works utilize the formal properties of shape, color, and composition to explore both literary and non-literary narratives. Among his most popular series, Frank Stella’s The Waves focuses on the story of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and is made up of 13 screenprints in total. While each screenprint varies in its subject matter, abstract oceanic motifs such as fish tails, waves, and scales are repeated throughout the series. Stella's use of exuberant neon pinks, oranges, and electric blues create a cohesion among all thirteen works, and the energetic use of color and line allows each print to stand proudly on its own. In the present work, Stella masterfully reduces the shapes of whale and fish tails into a cacophony of colors, the viewers eye catches and chases images of fish and waves that appear and disappear into the central circle.
