About This Lot

Richard Diebenkorn was a versatile and influential 20th-century American painter who, over the course of a long career, defied convention and worked in several distinct aesthetic periods. Considered a quintessentially Californian artist, he is perhaps best remembered as a founding member of the Bay Area Figurative movement along with such artists as David Park and Elmer Bischoff. The present untitled lithograph from 1970 was produced early on in the artist's interest in abstract representation. In the late 1960s, Diebenkorn began to abandon his figurative approach, instead working in a unique geometric style that is perfectly exemplified in this work. An impression of this print has not come to auction in almost ten years.
